1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device (computer, tablet, or mobile phone) when you visit our website. They help us provide you with a better experience by remembering your preferences and understanding how you use our platform.
We also use your browser's local storage (section 3.2). Some emails we send contain a small image that tells us when they are opened; see section 3.2 of our Privacy policy.
2. How we use cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes:
Essential cookies
Required for basic website functionality and security. These cookies cannot be disabled.

Measured without cookies
Without any cookie, and whether or not you accept analytics, we measure how fast pages load (Vercel Speed Insights) and record JavaScript errors on our own pages. Neither identifies you or stores anything on your device.
3. Types of cookies we use
3.1 Essential cookies
These cookies are essential and cannot be disabled. They enable core functionality such as signing in and security.

3.2 Functional cookies and local storage
These remember your settings, such as light or dark mode.

3.2.1 Push notification data
Note: Push notifications use browser service workers and subscription data stored in our database, not cookies. However, we include this information here for transparency.
Stored data: When you enable push notifications, we store:
- Push subscription endpoint (unique URL for your browser)
- Encryption keys (p256dh and auth) for secure message delivery
- Your notification preferences (events, bookings, certificates, feedback, announcements)
This data is stored in our secure database and is only used to deliver push notifications you've requested. Notifications reach you through your browser maker's push service, which sees only where to deliver them and when, because the message is encrypted. When you turn push notifications off on a device, we stop sending them there and delete that device's subscription details.
3.3 Analytics cookies
These cookies help us understand how visitors and signed-in members interact with our platform. We only set them if you accept analytics in the cookie banner, or turn analytics on in Privacy and data while signed in, and you can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
Foundation Year / placement blog engagement: if you are signed in, have accepted analytics cookies, and have not turned analytics off in your account, we may record article opens, approximate reading time, scroll depth, and clicks or downloads on Foundation Year / placement blog pages. This feeds an internal Blog Analytics view for administrators so we can improve educational content. It is not used for advertising. Rejecting analytics cookies or turning analytics off in your account stops this collection.

4. Third-party cookies
We use third-party services that may set their own cookies. We do not control these cookies, and you should check the relevant third party's website for more information.
Google Maps shows a map on event pages and helps staff find a venue when setting up events and organisations. Course pages can show preview videos from YouTube or Vimeo; the video is loaded only when you open the preview, and YouTube videos use YouTube's privacy-enhanced address, but the preview picture can come from YouTube. Google reCAPTCHA runs on the contact, site-feedback and create-account forms; on the sign-in page it loads only when you open the form to create an account. Card payments happen on Stripe's own checkout page. These providers may set their own cookies and receive your internet address. 5. How to manage cookies
Browser settings
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can set your browser to refuse cookies or delete certain cookies. However, please note that if you block or delete essential cookies, some features of our platform may not function properly.
You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. If you are signed in on your organisation's site, your analytics choice there is also saved to your account, and you can change it under Privacy and data, in the menu under your name, too. A change in either place changes the other: in your account, and in the browser you are using. Turning analytics off stops Foundation Year / placement blog engagement tracking, and removes Google Analytics cookies where your browser allows. A choice made while signed out stays in that browser only. The cookie banner never changes your marketing emails or whether your name shows on email open records.
6. Changes to this cookie policy
We may update this cookie policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons.
Material changes will be notified via the platform or email.
